Giving a boost to logistics development

Quang Ninh Province has invested in major transport infrastructure projects to create conditions for logistics service development in a bid to become a regional logistics and multimodal transportation center connecting Vietnam to the world.

Strategically located, with land and sea borders with China - a billion-population market, Quang Ninh Province has great potential for logistics service development.

The city of Mong Cai currently has seven ports, nine inland wharfs, 16 check-points with adequate technical equipment for control of export goods, along with warehousing facilities and loading docks covering a total area of more than 130,000sq.m, and 13 cold storage facilities providing enough space for more than 2,500 40-feet containers or about 50,000 tonnes of goods.

In September 2022, Quang Ninh Province officially put into use the Van Don-Mong Cai Expressway, forming a chain of expressways from Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong-Ha Long-Van Don-Mong Cai with total length of nearly 600km, reducing travel from Hanoi to the Mong Cai international border crossing from 5-6 hours to less than 3.5 hours.

Dr. Vo Tri Thanh, Director of the Institute for Brand and Competitiveness Strategy, said that the Van Don-Mong Cai Expressway connects the three most important border crossings of the northern region: Lao Cai, Huu Nghi and Mong Cai, making Quang Ninh Province a strategic transit point in the East Asia-Southeast Asia-ASEAN-China region, the “Two Corridors, One Belt” cooperation zone between Vietnam and China, and the expanded Gulf of Tonkin inter-regional cooperation area, helping promote regional linkages in the Northern Key Economic Zone and the Red River Delta.

“I believe the Van Don-Mong Cai Expressway will help Quang Ninh Province promote economic growth in a wide range of fields such as trade, services, industry, tourism and agriculture,” Thanh added.

Quang Ninh Province is studying the project to set up a 98.02ha Asia-Pacific agriculture, forestry and seafood trade center in Mong Cai City’s Hai Yen Ward. The center, together with Van Ninh General Port and border crossing economic infrastructure, will form a logistics cluster in the northeastern region, helping promote Vietnamese farm produce exports to China and Northeast Asia.

Quang Ninh Province is also developing a modern seaport system. Construction of the more than 82ha Van Ninh General Port (first stage) with total investment of over VND2.2 trillion is underway and is expected to finish in 2024. The port will contribute to increased import and export shipping.

Following a year-long trial, Maersk Line - the world’s largest international container shipping company - recently opened a fixed shipping route to the Cai Lan International Container Terminal in Ha Long City. In the first nine months of 2022, the volume of goods transported via Quang Ninh’s seaports increased 110 percent compared with the same period last year.
